Classification of Tankers

Worldwide, the tanker ships are much more better revenue oriented than other types of ships. These are also, the most expensive ships built.
There are seven (7) types of a tanker ship.
01.Premium Range <16500 DWT.
02.General Purpose (G.P.) 16500-24999 DWT.
03.Medium Range (M.R.) 25000-44999 DWT.
04.Long Range I (L.R.I) 45000-79999 DWT.
05.Long Range II (L.R.II) 80000-159999 DWT.
06.Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) 160000-319999 DWT.
07.Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) >320000 DWT.

Premium Range is the smallest ship in terms of DWT available in the Tankers, while ULCC is the largest available tanker ship capable of carrying humongous quantity of precious liquids.

What is a Tanker Ship?

This is a type of a ship which has the capacity to carry million tons(mt) of liquids. There are special holds in the tankers which assist in preservation of the liquid.
These liquids are classified as
01.Crude Oil Carriers.
02.Chemical Carriers.
03.Product Carriers.
04.Gas Carriers.
05.Combination Carriers.

These liquids are also measured in DWT(Dead Weight Tonnage).

Out of these, the mostly traded form of liquid is Crude Oil followed by Chemical.

The largest Crude Oil Carrier is over 500,000 DWT.For a crude carrier, the vessel must be fitted with a Crude Oil Washing (COW) and an Inert Gas System (IGS).

Chemical Carriers are also known as Product Tankers. There are as many as 1000 chemicals traded by sea today.
Chemical Tankers can carry approximately 90 mt of bulk liquid products.

Product Carriers can be clean or dirty depending upon the trade between shippers and merchants.

Gas Carriers are of 2 types. They are LNG and LPG.
LNG is a clean fuel, regarded as a special cargo which cannot be compared to any other form of shipping.
LPG is a primarily used domestically as a means of cooking food and in Industrial houses for heating purposes.

Combination Carriers.
These are the formation of two products of liquids traded together for better benefits. They are kept in separate holds of the ship.

What is a Container Ship?

This a ship in which all the cargo is loaded or stuffed inside a container and sealed from outside. The beauty of this ship is that huge amounts of cargo can be loaded in these containers.
There are 3 different types of containers. They are
01.20' Container.
02.40' Container.
03.45' Container.

In between, there are reefer containers also which is a refrigerated container. This is a special type of a container in which the good/cargo, mostly meat and diary products is preserved under a given temperature.

A container ship loads cargo and it is always measured in TEUs.

TEU = Twenty Equivalent Units.

Further,a container ship can load cargoes ranging from 300,000 TEU to 1500,000 TEU.It can always increase the capacity.

Further, these containers are surveyed, passed and given an accreditation by ISO.

This is a big boost to international trade as these ships are carrying massive amounts of cargo/es from one port to another port. The traveling to and fro of container ships carrying cargo/oes from one port to another port is also known as containerization.

Nowadays, containerization has left behind breakbulk ships which were used in the past. This is a rapid form of transport and it is highly respected by the international community.

A.P.Moller Maersk Group is the biggest ISO container company in the world.
It has a market share of around 20% and around 600 ships in their fleet comprising container ships.

What is a Bulk Carrier Ship?

A Bulk Carrier ship is a ship which carries cargo worth tons and tons from one port to another port.
The word Bulk Carrier itself gives the indication of this type of a ship. These ships are designed in such a way such as to carry cargo in huge quantities, that's why the word "BULK" is mentioned.

This a ship where the cargo is stored in an unpackaged form.
The ship has got a number of holds both above deck and below deck, such as to carry the maximum amount of cargo possible.

The cargo being taken from one port to another port could be Bauxite/Alumina,Bricks,Cattle,Cement,Coal,Grains,
Iron Ore,Phosphates,Rice,Salt,Sugar.

The most common form of cargo carried in bulk carriers is Iron Ore, followed by Grains and other commodities.

The bulk carriers carries cargoes and it is measured in DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage).

The MS Berge Stahl is the largest bulk carrier ship in the world. She is registered in Stavanger, Norway. She was previously registered in Monrovia, Liberia.

An iron ore carrier, the Berge Stahl has a capacity of 364,767 metric tons of deadweight (DWT). She was built in 1986 by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The Berge Stahl is 1,122 feet (343 m), has a beam, or width, of 208.3 feet (65 m), and a draft, or depth in the water, of 23 m.

Shipping Industry

There are a lot of Industries on our beautiful planet Earth.Due to the fluctuations of the market, a lot of Industries have been affected as of late. These are bound to happen as the days are passing by.This is happening because these organizations are connected to the stock market. There is no surety of this Industry in the future.

But, there is one and only one Industry which will always be there till the end of the human race, and that is the
Shipping Industry.

As we all know about our planet`s composition, the land to water ratio is 30:70.
So, this is enough to suggest that water will always be there as it is the source/origin of life.
